How Long, Halong?

Jan. 16, HALONG BAY / Hanoi

We took a side trip to Halong Bay a few days ago. With almost two million people visiting every year, we were only one of a few people hopping on buses in Hanoi.

What should've been a three hour bus ride became five. The cause? A two-car accident whose participants were awaiting a local policeman created a traffic jam that went for miles. Here's a segment of the queue:

Some of the better tour guides bought their clients snacks and told them about the scenery around the traffic jam. Ours didn't tell us what was going on before he jumped out of the bus and bought himself some sugar cane to munch on.

We finally got moving again and got onto a junk boat in the bay.

Obligatory self-portrait!

We stopped at a cool island cave, all lit up like Disneyland.
